Making the Weather
In Folk, in Myth, in Legend
A threefold test.
Schiva, Vishnu, Brahmin.
Father, Son, Holy Ghost.
Body, Mind, Spirit.
Triune, Triumvirate, Tribunal.
One is Isolate
Two is Divisive
Three is Peace.
Three is Torment.
Three is Potent.
Power, Power, Power.
Air, Fire, Water.
Three Dark Figures,
Making the Weather.

Ron Baird, rather than naming his sculpture that stands in front of the Federal Government’s Atmosphere Environment Services Building, defined his work by the poem, included above. This large, kinetic, weathering steel sculpture was erected in 1971 with its “three dark figures” meant to represent the elements of air, fire, and water. Recently, to help ensure the sculpture’s longevity SBA worked with an art conservator Maltby & Associates Inc. and a heritage structural engineers Tacoma Engineering Inc. to rehabilitate it. Partially dismantled due to safety concerns, the sculpture required repair and conservation. The team saved as much of the original weathering steel pieces as possible, with repairs and fabrication of new elements to match the original and restore the sculpture to its original stature. The conserved kinetic arms elements were assembled and pre-weathered in the shop, and re-installed onto the original three towers. It sounds easier than it was given the immense scale of Canada’s tallest sculpture!

#tbt #ravinewinery After the heritage work was completed at the Ravine Vineyard Estate Winery, SBA turned its attention to providing new buildings to create a dynamic streetscape in phases two and three of the project. These facilities were located to “bookend” the two heritage buildings with the historic Woodruff House remaining as the axis point for the site. The production building helped to enhance the ability to transform the family farm into a strong business where patrons could have greater access the fruits, products, and wine produced on the property. Most recently, the Event Centre has provided a space for people to create memories on this historic acreage in a modern building designed to be versatile and elegant. Large windows create a vistas to the beautiful vineyard, and a modern terrace allows guests to experience the beauty of St. David’s.

Exciting heritage projects blend the old and the new. For the Ravine Vineyard Estate Winery in St. David’s, Ontario SBA designed a destination that showcased the history of Niagara in a harmonious streetscape of buildings the reflected a diversity of uses. The first of three phases of work focused on the adaptive reuse of two heritage buildings: Woodruff House and the Packing Shed. Woodruff House was designed as a multi-purpose space to accommodate historical exhibitions, tastings, and wine sales. The packing shed, symbolic of smaller ancillary buildings that have slowly disappeared from the region, was reconstructed, and converted into a restaurant space in which local products could be highlighted. Situated picturesquely on the vast vineyard, Phase 1 of the work set the stage for future projects to transform this farm setting into a dynamic experience for its visitors.

#tbt to the Gage Park Fountain and Watercourse in Hamilton.

Between the “before” and the “after” photographs of projects, a tremendous amount of work, creativity, and teamwork occurs to help conserve our heritage. Frequently with heritage conservation work you cannot appreciate the extent of repairs or conservation treatments needed until you start into the project. To address these unseen elements, the ingenuity and experience of the team from Design Lead to the contractors on site are crucial to making the project successful.

For the Gage Park foundation, vandalism and graffiti, deteriorated waterproofing, the sheer size of the fountain, and its construction out of Queenston limestone which can no longer be quarried, all contributed to the complexity of the conservation work needed. To help rehabilitate the fountain and watercourse, SBA worked with an amazing group of people to conserve this large stone fountain, its bronze accessories, and the surrounding landscape. In throwing back to this project, it is wonderful to reflect on the way research, expertise, experience, and a good team comes together for the benefit of our community and our heritage.

Toronto is home to heritage large and small- some of it plainly seen while some of it remains hidden awaiting discovery. No matter what, our heritage adds to the character of the city.
Walking along, a pedestrian might miss the Amsterdam Square Fountain on the north-east corner of Avenue Road and St.Clair Ave East. This terracotta fountain dates to 1929 when Herbert Hale Williams, notable philanthropist and real estate tycoon in Toronto, donated this fountain and surrounding parkland to the city as a token of his love for Toronto.
This fountain is a replica of the Van Karnebeek Fountain , located on the grounds of the Peace Palace in The Hague, Netherlands and was completed by the sculptor of the original fountain , Willem C. Brouwer. This fountain features carved maple leaves as an homage to its Canadian location.
Time and climate has affected this sculptural fountain over the years and SBA worked with the City of Toronto to conserve this lovely fountain so it remains a heritage gem to passers by.

Happy New Year from SBA!

As we start to look forward to new and exciting projects, we are taking a moment to be thankful for some of the great work we have done previously. SBA worked on multiple phases of work at Sainte-Marie Among the Hurons National Historic Site from the blacksmith shop, carpentry, and chapel post-fire make safe to their reconstruction as well as the reconstruction of other, small structures. This interpretive museum helps to provide visitors a window into our rich history, and the firm’s work at the site reflected the level of detail and care needed to help ensure the authenticity of the site.

#tbt SBA’s restoration of the Stanley Barracks G

#tbt SBA’s restoration of the Stanley Barracks Gates. Currently located at the entrance to Guildwood Village at the intersection of Guildwood Parkway and Kingston Road, these gates, initially forged in England in 1839, once marked the entrance to the New Fort York ( currently Exhibition Place, Toronto).
By 1950, Rosa and Spencer Clark, founder of the Guild of Arts repurposed and relocated the gates to mark the entrance to their idyllic garden community.
SBA coordinated the restoration of the gates as well as the masonry piers and lanterns that sit atop the piers. Upon completion, the restored gates once again welcomed residents and visitors to this unique part of Toronto.
