Ajax Multi-Use Campus

The Durham Catholic District School Board, the Durham District School Board and the Town of Ajax pooled resources to produce a multi-use campus on an eight-hectare site. The project included two separate high schools, a 500-seat community theatre, a food school with a 1,000-seat food court, two libraries, a community police centre and a community college branch office.

The challenge of the project focused on providing spaces that could be easily personalized within this large complex. The design relied on view corridors, clarity of building elements, identification of realm and provision of daylight. Both school boards had to be satisfied with student control and building/equipment security before signing off on the project. The teaching laboratories, libraries and the individual study areas are fully computerized. The food school kitchen prepares all served food with a daily changing menu. The theatre included ‘State-of-the-Art’ audio-visual systems, stagecraft infrastructure and up-to-date lighting facilities. The design of the stage supported a full range of theatrical productions from large-scale musicals to single performer showcases.
